   USS LIBERTY
1. THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CONCERNING THE USS LIBERTY WAS MADE
AVAILABLE TO NEWS MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES AT THE PENTAGON, WASHINGTON,
D.C., TODAY: THE CASUALTY LIST ON THE LIBERTY NOW STANDS AT 9 DEAD,
75 WOUNDED (INCLUDING T LEAST 15 SERIOUSLY) AND 22 MISSING. THE
SKIPPER OF THE LIBERTY SAYS THAT HE BELIEVES THAT SOME OF THE 22
MISSING MEN MAY BE FOUND IN THE FLOODED COMPARTMENTS OF THE SHIP.
NO NEXT-OF-KIN HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED YET.
   THE LIBERTY RENDEZVOUSED WITH TWO DESTROYERS AT 1225 A.M.
WASHINGTON TIME ABOUT 420 MILES ESE OF SUDHA BAY, CRETE. ONE DOCTOR
AND ONE CORPSMAN FROM EACH DESTROYER WENT ON BOARD THE LIBERTY. AT
0430 A.M. WASHINGTON TIME, HELICOPTERS FROM THE AMERICA MET THE
LIBERTY ABOUT 385 MILES FROM SUDHA BAY. 15 SERIOUSLY WOUNDED WERE
REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN MOVED TO THE AMERICA. A TOTAL OF ABOUT 35 ARE
EXPECTED TO BE MOVED BY CHOPPER TO THE AMERICA, PLUS THE NINE BODIES
AT 0530 A.M. WASHINGTON TIME THE LIBERTY RENDEZVOUS WITH THE
AMERICA. NOW THE LIBERTY IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE AT SUDHA BAY AT 0630 P.M.
WASHINGTON TIME TOMORROW. THEY ARE MAKING ABOUT 10 KNOTS. THE
AMERICA PUT SEVERAL OFFICERS AND MEN ABOARD THE LIBERTY TO HELP MAN HER.
   THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE CANNOT SPECULATE ABOUT THE FATE OF THE
22 MISSING MEN BEYOND THE INFORMATION ABOVE. IN ANSWER TO THE QUES-
TION, "WAS EGYPT AND ISRAEL NOTIFIED THAT THE LIBERTY WAS IN THE
EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN?" A DEFENSE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN SAID, "WE ARE
LOOKING INTO THAT."
   IN ANSWER TO QUERIES, IT MAY BE SAID THAT THE THREE TECHNICAL
REPRESENTATIVES ABOARD THE LIBERTY WORK FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF
DEFENSE.
