1. FOLLOWING QUERY RECEIVED FROM UPI, LONDON QUOTE WE HAVE
RECEIVED CONFLICTING REPORTS FROM NAPLES ABOUT THE SIXTH FLEET
BEING IN A STATE OF HIGH ALERT. CAN YOU COMMENT ON THIS? UNQUOTE.
2. THIS HEADQUARTERS MADE FOLLOWING RESPONSE QUOTE THE SIXTH
FLEET MAINTAINS A HIGH STATE OF READINESS AT ALL TIMES. A SHIP CANNOT
GO TO SEA UNLESS IT IS IN A HIGH STATE OF READINESS. IT IS IMPOS-
SIBLE TO BE AT SEA WITHOUT BEING READY. ALL THIS MEANS THAT THE FLEET
IS PRESENTLY CONDUCTING BUSINESS AS USUAL. UNQUOTE.
3. FOREGOING MAY BE USED BY OFFICIAL SPOKESMEN IN DEALING WITH THE
PRESS. IF QUERIED FURTHER ABOUT ANY SPECIAL CONDITIONS OR ALERTS, YOU
MAY USE THE FOLLOWING RESPONSE QUOTE I WOULD ONLY SAY THAT THE SIXTH
FLEET IS MERELY COMPLYING WITH ITS STANDARD OF BEING READY AT ALL
TIMES. UNQUOTE. SPOKESMEN SHOULD GUARD AGAINST INADVERTENTLY
DRIFTING BEYOND THESE SPECIFIC RESPONSES OR GIVING ANY ELABORATION
WHATSOEVER.
