UNCLASS ECCC 10529 SUBJ: PERFORMANCE OF USS LIBERTY
PERSONNEL.
1. HAVING HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW COMPLETELY THE ACTION
INVOLVING YOUR COMMAND 9-14 JUNE, I DESIRE TO EXPRESS MY DEEP
ADMIRATION FOR THE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF THE OFFICERS AND CREW
OF LIBERTY. THE MANNER IN WHICH YOUR CREW PERFORMED WHILE
UNDER ATTACK AND IN RETURNING YOUR DAMAGED SHIP TO PORT IS A LASTING
TRIBUTE TO THEIR TRAINING AND YOUR LEADERSHIP AND A GREAT EXAMPLE TO
ALL WHO FOLLOW A CAREER AT SEA. IT IS CLEARLY EVIDENT THAT THE EXERCISE
OF YOUR PERSONAL LEADERSHIP, IN SPITE OF WOUND AND SHOCK WAS THE
MAJOR FACTOR IN KEEPING LIBERTY AFLOAT AND OPERATING UNTIL
ASSISTANCE ARRIVED.
2. WE HAVE BEEN PROUD TO HAVE LIBERTY IN THE EUROPEAN
COMMAND. THE PERFORMANCE OF LIBERTY PERSONNEL HAS BEEN IN
KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITIONS OF THE US ARMED FORCES.
SIGNED: LYMAN L. LEMNITZER, GENERAL, USA
